Aweza is a mobile app that allows users to translate phrases among the languages in South Africa.

Review: Challenge – South Africa, a beautiful, multi-cultural and multi-lingual country, is located on the southern tip of Africa. South Africa has 11 official languages which are Afrikaans, English, isiNdebele, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sesotho sa Leboa, Sesotho, Setswana, siSwati, Tshivenda and Xitsonga. Additionally, there are several other languages. Language barriers can be overcome through gestures and basic phrases for simple interactions however communication can be problematic when for example students can’t communicate with teachers or doctors cannot communicate with patients. Aweza has created a multi-lingual phrase translation app for South African languages. Solution – Aweza created an app to help facilitate communication among South Africa’s multilingual society. Users simply download the app and create an account. Once the account is created, the user then selects the languages for translation. Each user has a dashboard where phrases and pictures can be viewed. Aweza is an interactive app because it allows users to help others to translate phrases to a different language. Foreigners and tourists can enhance their travel experience in South Africa, because the Aweza app makes communicating with people easier. Additional Notes: Aweza is currently available on Android devices and plans to release on iOS as well. Impact: Given that Aweza is currently focused in South Africa, we give it a “Local Impact” rating.
